Community Benefit Program
Community Hospital truly is part of the community it serves. We offer everything from classes and support groups to direct services and grant funding to meet healthcare needs in our community. 
It's a community thing...
About a decade ago, Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula created the Community Benefit Program. We wanted to make sure we were doing our part to keep our community healthy.
In 2008, we kept that commitment by providing $140.7 million and 23,445 volunteer hours to help the community. Here's how we did it:
We improved access to healthcare
Some $135,962,093 was dedicated to people in need, people who might not otherwise be able to afford healthcare. This money also includes the unreimbursed cost of caring for those covered by government insurance programs such as Medi-Cal and Medicare.
We built healthy communities
We earmarked $2,466,681 for determining and addressing the community's health needs.
We made health, education, and wellness priorities
We devoted $1,698,135 to educating people about how their lifestyle choices affect their health. We focused on self-care, early detection, and disease management. And we made sure our healthcare professionals were receiving the latest education.
We took special care with those who have special needs
We invested $547,025 in those at risk because of age, involvement in a violent relationship, chemical dependence, mental illness, HIV, or socioeconomics.

Tracking and reporting community benefit activities to the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) is a requirement of the state Legislature (SB 697).

Community benefit grantmaking guidelines
Community Hospital makes grants from the Community Benefit Fund to nonprofit organizations and multi-agency collaborative organizations in support of health assessment and improvement projects within our service area.

Speakers Bureau
Part of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula's mission as a nonprofit organization is to inform and educate our community about health issues.
Upon request, the hospital's Communication and Marketing department will work to furnish speakers on health and medical topics. In most cases, there is no fee. Exceptions include a talk that constitutes training or enhances a company's ability to make money, a presentation that requires extraordinary preparation, or an appearance that lasts more than 30 minutes.
