Caring for yourself, while taking care of others

Caregiver “burnout” is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. Attitudes can change from positive and caring, to negative and unconcerned. When caregivers don’t get the help they need, or if they try to do more than they are able — both physically and financially — they may experience fatigue, stress, anxiety, and depression, and these emotions may continue once their patient or loved one dies.

• Care for yourself while caring for others.
• Identify what compassion fatigue is and recognize the symptoms.
• Address difficulties that arise while caring for an end-of-life patient or loved one.
• Take steps to care for yourself when a patient or loved one passes.
• Recognize the stages of grief.
• Move forward in your healing.
• Prepare yourself for your next patient.

Who should attend this workshop? Anyone who is in a caregiving role —nurses, CNAs, staff at care facilities, caregivers of loved ones, volunteers, and anyone who works with patients with a serious illness.

Facilitators: Holly Hatton and Gretchen Taylor
