Rotary International has had a long standing commitment to blood donation. In 2006 the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) awarded Rotary International the Outstanding Achievement Award for, "…embracing the mission of blood donation and for the organization's instrumental role in helping to provide safe blood to communities around the world."
In January of 2008 the Monterey Peninsula Rotary clubs contributed to that commitment by holding the Annual Rotary Challenge. This challenge encourages blood donation by having local clubs compete against one another to see which club can achieve the highest participation. Eight of the local Rotary clubs joined the challenge, including: Carmel, Carmel Valley, Monterey, Monterey International, Monterey Pacific, Monterey Sunrise, Pacific Grove and Seaside. In total the clubs donated 70 units of blood. The Monterey Pacific Rotary Club was the winner of the challenge for the second year in a row with 87% participation.
A blood donation is one of the most generous gifts one person can give to another. Through this simple act, someone in need is given hope and a chance for another day. We are grateful for the dedication of our local Rotary members and extend our sincere thanks to all that rose to the challenge and donated blood.
