Household tips

Bathing

Turn your water heater to 120 degrees or less to prevent scalding, and test the water before placing your child in the bathtub. The water should feel warm. Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub.

Cabinets

Use safety latches on cabinets, and keep hazardous items on the uppermost shelves.

Changing Table

Never leave your child unattended on a changing table.

Crib

Make sure crib slats are 2 3/8 inches apart. Place the crib away from windows and heaters.

Emergency Phone Numbers

Post any important phone numbers — doctor, police, poison control, etc. — in an easily accessible area (i.e. on the refrigerator).

Medicines

Make sure medications have childproof caps and are stored in locked cabinets. Never refer to medicine as "candy."

Stove

Use only the back burners or make sure pan handles are turned to the back of the stove. Don't hold your baby while cooking.

Toys

Check labels to ensure toys are age-appropriate for your child. Avoid balloons and toys with small parts, as children can choke on them.
