Bariatric Surgery
Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula is a Bariatric Surgical Center of Excellence, designated by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.
Bariatric surgery — also known as gastric bypass surgery — has been made famous by celebrities such as Carnie Wilson, Today show weatherman Al Roker, comedian Roseanne Barr, and record producer Randy Jackson of American Idol fame. The bariatric procedure restricts food intake by closing off a portion of the lower stomach and rerouting the digestive system so less food is eaten and absorbed. The surgery has the potential to completely reverse the side effects of obesity including diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea.
Patient care at Community Hospital begins before the bariatric surgery with a one-on-one meeting with a psychologist to determine whether the patient is ready for the procedure, support group attendance, and dietary education. Following the procedure, the patient receives close follow-up treatment from the surgeon and his support team.
Renowned bariatric surgeon, Mark Vierra, M.D., has performed more than 600 surgeries at Community Hospital since the hospital started offering the procedure in November of 2001.
Morbid obesity puts a person at risk for heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, sleep apnea, and depression. If you meet certain requirements and all your attempts at serious weight reduction have failed, you may be a candidate for bariatric surgery, which can help you lose weight, be more active, and regain your health. Community Hospital’s program is designed to support you emotionally and physically throughout your entire experience. Talk to your doctor to see if bariatric surgery might be right for you.
