Medical Staff Status Categories

 

Active Staff

  1. Maintain a residence and active office practice in the community on a full-time basis which, according to criteria approved by the Medical Executive Committee, are located close enough to the hospital to provide appropriate continuity and quality of care. For purposes of these bylaws, full-time shall mean that the practitioner shall be available at that office or those offices during sufficient hours and with such frequency that, in the opinion of the Medical Executive Committee, continuity of care for those patients under that member's direction is provided. Exceptions to this requirement can be made, for good cause, by the Medical Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees.
  2. Maintain privileges as are required to provide on-call and/or emergency specialty back-up services in the practitioner's specialty. Exceptions to this requirement may be recommended, for good cause, by the Medical Executive Committee.
  3. Are involved in at least twenty-four (24) patient care activities during two (2) consecutive years; these may consist of admissions, assisting at surgeries, consultations, and/or other patient care procedures or activities appropriate to the member’s specialty, as determined by the Medical Executive Committee.

Courtesy Staff

  1. Are involved in not more than twenty-four (24) patient care activities, including admissions, assisting at surgeries, consultations or other patient care procedures or activities appropriate to the member’s specialty as determined by the Medical Executive Committee, but at least four (4) patient care activities including admissions, assisting at surgeries, consultations or other acceptable patient care procedures or activities during two consecutive years; although exceptions to this requirement may be recommended by the Medical Executive Committee for good cause.
  2. Are members in good standing of the active Medical Staff of another Joint Commission accredited hospital and have been involved in at least twenty-four (24) patient care activities at that Joint Commission accredited hospital as defined in Section 3.2-1(c) in the preceding two (2) years, although exceptions to this requirement may be recommended by the Medical Executive Committee for good cause.

Consulting Staff

  1. Are involved in at least two (2) patient care activities including performing or assisting at surgeries, consultations or other patient care procedures per two (2) year period. These patient care activities may consist of assisting at surgeries, consultations, and/or other patient care procedures or activities appropriate to the member’s specialty as determined by the Medical Executive Committee, although exceptions to this requirement may be recommended for good cause by the Medical Executive Committee.
  2. Are members in good standing of the active Medical Staff of another Joint Commission accredited hospital and have been involved in at least twenty-four (24) patient care activities at that Joint Commission accredited hospital as defined in Section 3.2-1(c) in the preceding two (2) years, although exceptions to this requirement may be recommended for good cause by the Medical Executive Committee.

Community Practice Staff

  1. Do not desire clinical privileges to treat patients at the hospital but desire to provide care to patients prior to and/or after hospitalization in the community. They may also desire to review the ongoing or past care, treatment, or services provided to their patients at the hospital.
  2. Maintain an active office practice on a full-time basis to provide appropriate continuity of quality care. For purposes of these bylaws, full-time shall mean that the practitioner shall be available at that office or those offices during sufficient hours and with such frequency that, in the opinion of the Medical Executive Committee, continuity of care for those patients under that member's direction is provided
  3. Demonstrate satisfactory current clinical competence by having at least one peer reference from an active staff member of the Medical Staff who routinely transfers care of patients from / to the practitioner, and at least one peer reference from an active medical member of this or another Joint Commission accredited hospital who is familiar with the practitioner’s practice and is able to comment on the clinical competence of the practitioner.
