MONTEREY, Calif. - The healing environment found at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula has been carried over into Comforts, the new gift shop operated by the Auxiliary to benefit the hospital.

"We want visitors to experience the new breed of hospital gift shops, where the idea is to create a place that feeds the soul and promotes healing," says Denise Borsella, Comforts supervisor. "When you walk in, all your senses are comforted. You are greeted by a smiling volunteer, soothing music, and lovely fragrances from the all-natural soaps and lotions. We are also going ‘green' with recycled paper for packaging and gift wrap."

Comforts, located behind double glass doors just inside the main entrance of the hospital, is hosting an open house on Wednesday, December 9. The public is invited to see the new space while enjoying music, free samples of chocolates, lotions, and items for children, and to do a little holiday shopping.

Comforts gift shop is three times larger than the shop it replaces. Visitors can now enjoy a broader selection of flowers, handmade jewelry, natural-fiber scarves, blankets, and sleepwear for adults and children. There are hypo-allergenic, non-shedding plush toys and many books and games that can raise the spirit and lighten the heart.

"We're trying to create an uplifting experience through the merchandise and the store itself," Borsella says. "And it's all for a good cause. Every year the Auxiliary has raised more than $100,000 from the gift shop. Those funds have benefited the hospital in many ways, including development of the Healing Garden, Family Birth Center entry gallery, and Comprehensive Cancer Center waiting room, and purchase of the bloodmobile and employee shuttle buses."

"With its increased size and expanded offerings," Borsella says, "we're hoping to raise even more money to assist the hospital and its programs."

The open house is from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. Comforts is closed on all major holidays. Purchases also may be made online, at https://shopchomp.geonetric.com/, for delivery to patients.
