Every Beat Counts MONTEREY, Calif. - Get your heart pumping at the free "Every Beat Counts" heart health fair at Del Monte Shopping Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on February 27.

The Tyler Heart Institute of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula is joining shopping center merchants and the American Heart Association for a day of free health screenings and fun, including live music, cooking demonstrations, heart-healthy food samples, exercise demonstrations, and an active-wear fashion show. Many stores will offer discounts, especially on items to help you get heart healthy.

Staff from Tyler Heart Institute will provide free blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose screenings and help interpret the results. They'll also offer information on strokes, smoking cessation, and CPR education. Dr. Richard Gray, medical director of Tyler Heart Institute, will staff an "ask the doctor" table, where people can get answers to heart health questions from an expert cardiologist.

Around the mall, visitors can listen to the soft rock of "The Peacemakers" while sampling heart-healthy food from PF Chang's, California Pizza Kitchen, and Whole Foods Market. Williams-Sonoma and Whole Foods also will have heart-healthy cooking demonstrations.

Macy's will host an active-wear fashion show and demonstrate hydrating facials. The Body Shop will provide hand massages, and Fleet Feet Sports and Naturalizer will feature athletic shoes. Lucy will offer an exercise class in the store, GameStop will demonstrate activities on the Wii® gaming system, and Energia Body Centre will do exercise demonstrations in the sunken garden area. Shop at Soma and 10 percent of the purchase price will benefit the American Heart Association.

Community Hospital's bloodmobile will be stationed in front of Century Theatres and shoppers are encouraged to donate blood to help meet community need.

Participants should start the day at the check-in table in front of Macy's, where they can pick up a "passport" outlining the day's activities. Participating merchants will mark the passport at each stop and then it can be turned in for prize drawings.

The event is being held as part of American Heart Month, promoted in February by the American Heart Association.
