MONTEREY, Calif. — Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula earned an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Score SM from the Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit made up of employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

The Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical and medication errors.

“Patient safety is Community Hospital’s first priority,” says Dr. Steven Packer, president and CEO. “With or without report cards, it is what we focus on every day. We strive to provide care using the best practices in the safest manner.”

“Hospitals like this that earn an ‘A’ have demonstrated their commitment to their patients and their community,” says Leah Binder, president and CEO of the Leapfrog Group.

The ‘A’ rating comes about one month after a Healthgrades report that ranked Community Hospital’s cardiac and orthopedic programs among America’s 100 Best Hospitals, and ranked its patient safety in the top 5 percent in the nation, as Community Hospital was the recipient of the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™ for 2 years in a row, 2011-2012.
Healthgrades is the leading provider of information to help consumers make informed decisions about physicians and hospitals.

The findings are part of American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2013: Healthgrades Report to the Nation, which evaluates the performance of approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 28 of the most common conditions and procedures.
