Respiratory-Care-LogoMONTEREY, Calif. — Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition under a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services available in hospitals.

About 700 hospitals, or approximately 15 percent of hospitals nationwide, have received this award from the American Association for Respiratory Care. To qualify, Community Hospital met benchmarks including:

  • All respiratory therapists hold certified respiratory therapist or registered respiratory therapist credentials or are legally recognized by the state as competent to provide respiratory care
  • Respiratory therapists are available 24 hours a day
  • Performance is regularly measured against other respiratory departments for efficiency and quality to achieve best practices
  • A physician is designated to as medical director of respiratory care services

The quality recognition program was started in 2003 to recognize hospitals that provide a level of care consistent with national standards and guidelines.

Respiratory therapists are specially trained healthcare professionals who work under doctors’ orders to provide a range of breathing treatments and other services to people with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, pneumonia and other lung or lung-related conditions.  Respiratory therapists also provide live-saving care to victims of trauma or cardiopulmonary arrest. Community Hospital has 28 respiratory therapists on its staff.
