Downsize the super size: Taking the fear out of eating out
Now that summer vacations are upon us, and you’re undoubtedly spending more time eating away from home, here are some tips to help you eat healthy and avoid nutritional pitfalls when you’re on the road:
- Eat a light snack before you go out for lunch or dinner.
- Avoid ordering anything that has “super size,” “value meal,” or“combo” in its title.
- Ask your waiter to hold the chips and salsa or bread and butter until your meal is served.
- Order a vegetable soup or salad to start.
- Order an appetizer as your entrée.
- Split an entrée with a friend.
- Don’t just plan to take home leftovers, ask your waiter to bring a to-go container with your food, and box up tomorrow’s lunch before you even start eating.
- Ask your waiter to put dressings, sauces, and toppings on the side.
- Share one dessert with everyone at your table.
- Drop out of the Clean-Plate Club.

Where there’s smoke …
When was the last time you checked your smoke detector? Can’t remember? You should check your detector (and batteries) at least once every six months. The average shelf life of a smoke detector can be somewhere between 10 to 15 years, but there’s no guarantee.
