Helping build a healthy community
Our Community Benefit Program was created nearly a decade ago to guide and measure our commitment to improving our community’s well-being — not just inside the hospital walls but also in the surrounding community.
In 2003, the program provided more than $63 million and in excess of 3,000 volunteer hours to help the community benefit in these ways:

We built healthy communities. We earmarked $839,306 for determining the community’s health needs and addressing the health goals identified by groups such as Tellus/ Díganos.
We made health education and wellness priorities. We devoted $1,189,179 to educating people about how their lifestyle choices affect their health. We focused on self-care, early detection, and disease management. And we made sure our healthcare professionals were receiving the latest education.
We improved access to healthcare. Some $60,670,778 was dedicated to people in need, people who might not otherwise be able to afford healthcare. This money also includes the unreimbursed cost of caring for those covered by government insurance programs such as Medi-Cal and Medicare.
We took special care with those who have special needs. We invested $590,586 in people at risk because of age, involvement in a violent relationship, chemical dependence, mental illness, HIV, or socioeconomics.
