Dr. Katz to share nutrition secrets at annual meeting

Dr. David L. Katz loves to cook. But that doesn’t mean he’s overweight. Perhaps that’s because he also enjoys carpentry, skiing, hiking, and horseback riding. Or maybe it’s because he works out at least 40 minutes most days. Or it could be because he and wife Catherine are raising an energetic family of five children between the ages of 6 and 16, plus three dogs and a gecko.

Most importantly, it’s because he practices what he preaches. Recognized by the Consumer’s Research Council of America as one of the country’s leading doctors in preventive medicine, Katz is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on nutrition, weight control, and the prevention of chronic disease. He provides expert advice on lifelong weight control, health, and contentment with food.

And he firmly believes he should not offer advice to patients, readers, or the public that he himself would be unwilling to follow.

“The epidemics of obesity and diabetes,” says Katz, “are as simple to explain as they will be hard to fix. We live in a perfect storm of obesigenic factors of our own devising, from tasty, energy-dense food everywhere we turn to unending innovations in labor-saving technology. No one thing ushered in the age of epidemic ‘diabesity,’ and no one strategy will fix it. We have to do everything we can — stack every accessible sandbag — to reverse the current trends. We can and will turn this tide, but not until we build up a barrier to the task. The floodwaters are rising; there is no time to waste.”

Katz, an associate professor of public health practice and formerly the director of medical studies in public health at the Yale University School of Medicine, will be the keynote speaker to some 500 guests at the annual meeting of Community Hospital Foundation and the Auxiliary to be held at the Monterey Conference Center on February 9.

Currently the director of the Yale Prevention Research Center, which he co-founded in 1998, a medical contributor for ABC News, syndicated health columnist for the New York Times, and nutrition columnist for O, The Oprah Magazine, Katz provides realistic solutions for everyday health dilemmas and discuss effective strategies for weight control and better nutritional health.

His expertise is in exposing common myths resulting in dietary confusion and clarifying the basic tenets of healthful eating. He addresses the challenges inherent in our environment and emphasizes that we need a blend of public politics and personal empowerment to move us toward a healthier future.

Katz is the author of nearly 100 scientific articles and nine books. His most recent text, The Flavor Point Diet: The Delicious, Breakthrough Plan to Turn Off Your Hunger and Lose the Weight for Good, outlines a diet intended to maximize eating pleasure, optimize health, and promote permanent weight loss.
