Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac Rehabilitation is a seven-week medically supervised program to help heart patients recover quickly and improve their overall physical, mental and social functioning. Cardiac Rehabilitation is recommended after heart surgery, a heart attack, angioplasty and/or a stent.  The goal is to stabilize, slow or even reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease, another cardiac event or death. Your Cardiac Rehabilitation program will begin shortly after you leave the hospital and will include exercise, education and an individualized care plan.

When you begin the program, you will be evaluated by a registered nurse, and started on a customized exercise and education program that will help get you back into shape and on the road to a full recovery. Your program will be tailored to your individual needs based on your age, previous level of exercise, personal goals and the severity of your heart disease.

During the monitored exercise sessions, your heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure, symptoms and progress are continuously monitored by the Cardiac Rehabilitation Registered Nurse's and Exercise Physiologists.  The education classes focus on how behaviors are linked to cardiac health and are taught by registered nurses, exercise physiologists, pharmacists and registered dietitians. Class topics include:

  • Reducing Risk Factors for Heart Disease
  • Healthy Eating for the Heart
  • Smart Exercise for the Heart
  • Stress Management & Relaxation
  • Emotional Aspects of Heart Disease
  • Understanding Your Heart Medications

Cardiac Rehabilitation participants usually attend three times a week during the seven-week program.  The Cardiac Rehabilitation staff will assist you in developing a plan for on-going exercise and heart health towards the end of your program.
