Preventing Heart Disease

Prevention is a primary focus of Tyler Heart Institute. After all, the best time to stop heart disease is before it even starts.

While heart disease can often be prevented through healthy eating and exercise, genetics also play a large part. Heart disease is a silent killer, and sadly, a heart attack is often the first symptom. Even if you feel healthy, you need to know your numbers.

Blood Donation

By the numbers

  • Blood pressure - Optimal blood pressure is below 120/80.
    • 120/80 to 139/89 - pre-hypertension.
    • 140/90 and above - hypertension.
  • Cholesterol -Your "good" cholesterol (HDL) should be greater than 50, and your "bad" cholesterol (LDL) should be optimally less than 100, but less than 70 if you have heart disease or are at high risk for heart disease. Your total cholesterol (HDL and LDL combined) should be less than 200.
  • Glucose - Fasting glucose should be less than 100.
  • Waistline - Waist measurements can be an important factor in determining risk for heart disease. Women should have a measurement of less than 35 inches, while men should have a measurement of less than 40 inches.

We offer simple blood tests that provide key indicators about your heart health. These tests are available on a walk-in basis at all of our labs - a doctor's order is not needed. If you choose to get a test, you will pay at the time of service. If you prefer, you can get a doctor's order for the test and your insurance may cover the cost.
