Burping

Burping your baby helps him or her get rid of excess air and provides relief of pressure in the baby's stomach. If your baby doesn't burp, don't be alarmed. He or she either doesn't need to or will burp later.

Recommended burping strategies:

Hold your baby upright, with his or her head on your shoulder. Use one arm to support your baby's bottom and the other arm to gently pat your baby on his or her back. Or rub the baby's back upward.

Place your baby - stomach first - on your lap. Use one hand to support the baby's head and the other hand to gently pat or rub the baby's back.

Place your baby in a sitting position on your lap. Use one hand to support the baby's back and head and the other hand to support the chin and front. Gently pat your baby's back.
