What to expect

Below you’ll find information to help prepare for overnight sleep studies and an out-of-center sleep apnea test.

Preparing for a sleep study

Once your sleep study appointment has been scheduled, arrive at the Sleep Disorders Center at 2 Upper Ragsdale Drive, Building D, Suite 220, Monterey, at the time indicated on your appointment letter. You should receive a telephone call one or two days prior to your appointment to confirm the date and time of your study. 

Please follow these instructions to ensure optimal conditions for your sleep study:

  • If you are currently using CPAP or BiPAP, bring your headgear, mask, or nasal pillows with you. If you are using an oral appliance, please bring it with you.
  • Bring the following items: insurance card(s), comfortable sleep clothing (nightgown or pajamas along with appropriate underwear), a pillow (if you prefer your own), a movie (VHS or DVD) and/or reading material, if you wish. Cable TV is available.
  • Take your regular medications unless otherwise instructed by your physician. If you regularly use nasal spray, bring it with you.
  • If Ambien or another sleep aid is prescribed, please bring it with you.
  • DO NOT drink caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea or soda with caffeine after noon on the day of your sleep study.
  • DO NOT drink any alcoholic beverages after noon on the day of your study.
  • Eat a regular dinner before you arrive (without caffeine or alcohol).
  • DO NOT take naps after noon on the day of your study.
  • Cell phones are not permitted at the sleep denter due to the possible disruption of the test and disturbance of other patients. If you must bring a cell phone, please turn it off or leave it in your vehicle. Telephones are available in each room to make (but not receive) calls.
  • Please shower or bathe before your study. Do not use “leave in” hair conditioner (like pomade) or use body oils of any type. Any type of hair style that prevents direct access to your scalp will need to be modified prior to your appointment.
  • Men: If you are clean shaven, please shave before your appointment.
  • If you need to leave the sleep center at a specific time, please tell your sleep technician in advance.

Parents: Preparing for your child’s sleep study

Arrive at the Sleep Disorders Center at 2 Upper Ragsdale Drive, Building D, Suite 220, in Monterey, at the time indicated on the appointment letter. You should receive a telephone call one or two days prior to the appointment to confirm the date and time of the study. 

Please follow these instructions to ensure optimal conditions for the sleep study:

  • An adult must stay overnight with a child under the age of 12. A cot will be available for a parent or other caregiver to sleep in the room with the patient.
  • Bring the following items: insurance cards, comfortable sleep clothing (nightgown or pajamas along with appropriate underwear), a pillow (if the child prefers their own), a movie (VHS or DVD) and/or a favorite book. Cable TV is available.
  • For the child’s comfort, please bring any favorite blanket or stuffed animal that the child normally has with them at bedtime.
  • Give any regular medications unless otherwise instructed by your child's doctor.  
  • DO NOT allow consumption of caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea or soda after noon on the day of the sleep study.
  • DO NOT allow naps after noon on the day of the study.
  • Cell phones must be turned off to avoid disruption of the test and disturbing other sleeping patients. Telephones are available in each room to make (but not receive) calls.
  • The child should shower or bathe before the study. Do not use “leave in” hair conditioner (like pomade) or use body oils of any type. Braids must be undone prior to the appointment. 
  • If you need to leave the Sleep Center at a specific time, please tell your sleep technician in advance.

Pediatric questionnaire

Please fill out and bring the pediatric questionnaire to your child’s sleep study.

Home sleep apnea test

  • Your instruction appointment will last approximately 1 hour.
  • Please return the recorder and all sensors to the Sleep Disorders Center between 8 and 10 a.m. the following morning. Please allow 5-10 minutes for equipment check in. In the event this timeframe does not work for you, please make other arrangements with the Sleep Disorders Center staff.
  • The recording system is expensive. If it is not returned or if it is damaged, you may be responsible for repair or replacement costs.
  • If you are unable to keep your appointment, please call us at (831) 649-7210 as soon as possible to cancel and reschedule.
  • Please fill out sleep questionnaire and sleep diary log and bring them with you to your appointment. If you do not bring them  with you, the documents will need to be filled out at the sleep center, which delay the set-up process.

After your sleep study

After you have undergone a sleep study and received a diagnosis, your doctor will likely order positive airway pressure (PAP) equipment for your treatment if indicated.
