Cardiac catheterization procedures

Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula

A broad range of minimally invasive diagnostic procedures and treatments are performed at Community Hospital by three highly experienced interventional cardiologists.

Cath lab procedures include:

  • Angiogram — To diagnose blockages in the arteries
  • Stent and balloon angioplasty — Insertion of a metal stent or balloon to open blockages and restore blood blow to the heart
  • Atherectomy — Removal of plaque from artery walls using a blade on a catheter

Our new structural heart program provides emerging procedures such as:

  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) — Replacing valves through a catheter, instead of opening the chest
  • Valvuloplasty — Inserting a balloon into a valve that doesn’t open properly, to widen it
  • Transcatheter mitral valve repair — Placing a clip to help close a leak that sometimes develops between the heart’s two left chambers
  • Patent foramen ovale closures — Closing holes in the wall separating the heart’s chambers
  • Treatment of left atrial appendage occlusion — Implanting a device called a Watchman to block blood clots from entering the left atrium, reducing the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) and the need for blood thinners
  • Treatment of coronary artery total occlusion — Opening blocked arteries with balloons and/or stents

Dr. Goldberg

Steven Goldberg, MD

Dr. Goldberg specializes in structural heart interventions or abnormalities of the valves and vessels. He launched Community Hospital’s structural heart program, which focuses on procedures such as TAVR — valve replacement without opening the chest. Dr. Goldberg has taken part in more than 100 of the procedures and participated in its clinical trials.

Dr. Joye

James D. Joye, MD

For more than 20 years, Dr. Joye has focused on complex coronary, structural heart, and endovascular procedures. At El Camino Hospital in Silicon Valley, he was founding the medical director of the cardiac catheterization labs and the structural heart program. Dr. Joye is a founding board member of VIVA Physicians, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to endovascular research and education. He has been the principal investigator in many clinical trials, and received more than 20 patents and founded three medical device companies for minimally invasive therapies for peripheral arterial disease.
