MONTEREY, Calif. - Our community has always recognized the unique healing environment at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, and now a national contest has confirmed the sentiment, naming it one of the 20 most beautiful hospitals in the United States.
In results announced Wednesday, Community Hospital placed 13th in the contest by Soliant Health, a healthcare staffing company based in Atlanta. The contest is in its second year, and more than 10,000 people cast votes online. San Diego's Sharp Memorial Hospital topped the list.
The web site describes Community Hospital this way: With stunning picture-window outlooks on forest and wildlife, this is definitely the hospital with the coolest views.
Community Hospital was nominated for the contest by a local resident who praised the staff and the environment:
"With the excellent and friendly staff and breathtaking view of Monterey, this hospital is beautiful truly on the inside and outside. Community Hospital has an uplifting environment with room views of waterfalls or forest scenery, with animals such as deer and squirrels roaming freely outside. It's so beautiful that my aunt from North Carolina chose to travel to California just so she could give birth to both her son and daughter at this hospital."
The comments reflect what Community Hospital leaders had in mind when the hospital opened in 1962. It was designed to be visually pleasing and environmentally healing, to be a hospital that didn't look like a hospital, helping to alleviate some of the fears and anxieties that can come with an illness.
"Thanks in large part to generous philanthropic support from our community," says Steven Packer, MD, president and CEO, "Community Hospital has been able to expand with that same philosophy, providing a place and the people - staff, volunteers, and doctors - that all contribute to making it one of the most beautiful hospitals in the United States."
