Jessica Zitter

MONTEREY, Calif. — Dr. Jessica Zitter, a leading voice on improving the way we die in America, will talk on the subject at a free event November 1 at Embassy Suites in Seaside.

A critical care and palliative medicine specialist in Oakland, Zitter is featured in the Oscar-nominated short documentary “Extremis.” The film follows Zitter and her intensive care unit patients and their families as they struggle with end-of-life decisions. It will be shown at the event.

ExtremisZitter is committed to changing the current approach to end-of-life medical decision-making. In today’s medical culture, she says, patients are often put on the “end-of-life conveyor belt,” and are intubated, catheterized, and attached to machines, often without even knowing they are dying.

Zitter is widely published on the topic, in her book, “Extreme Measures — Finding a Better Path to the End of Life,” and in national publications including the New York Times, Washington Post, HuffPost, and Time.

The event is from 2-3 p.m. November 1 and is sponsored by Montage Health, parent company of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. Staff from Montage Medical Group’s Palliative Medicine Service will be available after the program to answer questions and provide free advance care directives for people to record their end-of-life wishes for care.

Registration is required, online at www.montagehealth.org/dyingwell or by calling (800) 388-4301.
