Monterey, Calif. — Starting August 1, Montage Health patients will find their healthcare experience changing with the launch of a new, sophisticated electronic health record (EHR). Epic, a state-of-the-art system, will enable healthcare providers to deliver seamless, comprehensive care for residents and visitors of Monterey County, and will provide patients with unprecedented access to their own health records. This move consolidates many of Montage Health’s electronic record systems into one and will improve quality, improve efficiency, and transform the patient experience.
Epic is used by the majority of top-ranked hospitals and medical schools in the nation, as well as leading healthcare organizations elsewhere in the world. More than 60 percent of Californians currently have a record in Epic, which is also used by Monterey County Health Department’s 9 community health centers, Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, Stanford Health Care, all of the University of California medical centers, and many other providers. Patient treatment information can be shared among all Epic facilities, allowing local providers to collaborate more effectively to improve patient safety and reduce duplication of services.
The new Epic system will not only allow better access for clinicians to health information, it will assist in improving the coordination of care across different parts of the health system. Information from laboratory, radiology, registration, pharmacy, surgery, physician offices, and more will be integrated into one record. All of the Montage Health entities, including Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, Montage Medical Group, Aspire Health Plan, and Community Health Innovations, along with participating clinicians outside of Montage Health, will use Epic.
As part of the Epic launch, all Montage Health patients will have access to MyChart, a free, secure, online portal, using an app or web site on their phone or computer. With greater access to their health information, patients are better able to manage their own healthcare and pursue their own optimal health and wellness. MyChart will enable patients to view their medical record and test results, update information, pay bills, and more. Additionally, Montage Medical Group patients can communicate with their care team via email and manage prescriptions and appointments online. For those who see healthcare providers outside of the Montage Health system, MyChart provides information patients can share with other hospitals, physicians, and family members.
“This significant investment in our patients’ health will transform the way we are able to address wellness in our community,” said Steve Packer, MD, president and CEO of Montage Health. “With Epic, we can provide better care for the individual, as well as look at issues impacting large populations of patients and proactively address risks to prevent illness and keep people out of the hospital.”
