Monterey, Calif. —Montage Health’s mobile clinic has expanded the number of locations where it provides free healthcare for the homeless and others in need on the Monterey Peninsula.

The mobile clinic started operating in September 2017 with a four-hour stop each Thursday in the parking lot of the Walgreens in Seaside. “More than 2,300 people are homeless in Monterey County, lacking ready access to basic necessities like food, running water, shelter, and healthcare,” says Dr. Steven Packer, president/CEO of Montage Health. “Through the mobile clinic, we are improving the health and wellness of this underserved group of people as well anyone who has trouble getting general medical care.”

The clinic is funded by Montage Health and contributions to Montage Health Foundation, including $500,000 from Monterey Peninsula Foundation, $200,000 from Montage Health’s Auxiliary, $64,000 from employees of Montage Health, and a substantial gift from Sara and James Jungroth. In 2018, the Hearst Foundation donated an additional $100,000.

The 40-foot-long mobile clinic’s features include:

  • Two exam rooms, and a waiting area that may be used as a third exam room, if needed
  • Oversight provided by a physician medical director and staffed with a nurse practitioner, social worker, other clinicians, and volunteers
  • Serving targeted areas on a scheduled basis

Care is provided for basic health issues such as earaches, coughs, sinus ailments, sore throats, minor infections, diabetes, and high blood pressure. This year, Montage Health and Monterey County Public Health have partnered to offer influenza and hepatitis A shots for mobile clinic patients. Painkillers, sedatives, sleeping pills, opioids, and other controlled medications are not carried in the clinic.

The mobile clinic reaches people who are getting little or no medical care as well as those who are going to emergency departments for issues that could have been treated earlier and at lower cost in a more appropriate setting. To date, the mobile clinic has served almost 900 patients free of charge.

Contributions to help support the mobile clinic are appreciated and can be made at montagehealthfoundation.org. To see a video about the mobile clinic and to the most recent schedules and services, go to montagehealth.org/mobileclinic.
