MONTEREY, Calif. — Are you at risk for diabetes? A simple, seven-question test developed by the American Diabetes Association can assess your risk in less than a minute.
The questionnaire was developed by the association in connection with national Diabetes Alert Day, held on the fourth Tuesday every March as a wake-up call because so many people have diabetes or prediabetes and don’t even know it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 84 million adults – more than 1 out of 3 – have prediabetes. Of those with prediabetes, only 10 percent know they have it. Prediabetes increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
The diabetes risk test can be found online at: www.communityhealthinnovations.com/diabetes/risk
“We encourage Monterey County residents to take a minute and take the quiz because our rates of diabetes and prediabetes are even higher than the national averages,” says Vilma Andari, director of the Monterey County Diabetes Collaborative. “For people at risk for type 2 diabetes, or those already diagnosed, the Diabetes Collaborative can help by connecting them with programs and services to meet their needs."
The collaborative was formed by Montage Health, Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System, and the Monterey Bay Independent Physicians Association and is led by Community Health Innovations. It was launched because of the alarmingly high rates of diabetes locally.
“In Monterey County, an estimated 12 percent of residents, about 28,000 people, have diabetes and another 45 percent, 105,000 people, are estimated to have prediabetes,” Andari says.
The collaborative is focusing on public education and engagement, prevention, and care, provided in many settings, in many ways countywide. To learn more about available resources, go to www.communityhealthinnovations.org/diabetes or call (831) 644-7457.
