MONTEREY, Calif. — Henry Liam Mullis was an early new year’s present for his parents, Nathalie and Randy, arriving three weeks ahead of his due date and in time to be the first baby born in 2020 at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.

Henry arrived at 6:38 a.m., weighing 5 pounds, 15 ounces. He met his two sisters, Melanie, 6, and Amelia, 4, via Facetime from the family’s home in Seaside. Nathalie says the girls broke into tears of excitement during the call.

Randy, a member of the Air Force, studies Spanish at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey. They expect to return home to Florida and their extended family later this year.

About 1,100 babies are born each year in Community Hospital’s Family Birth Center, which has 13 private rooms for labor, delivery, and recovery, as well as a neonatal intensive care unit.
