New ways for the new age

Jennifer L. Martinez is a new Community Hospital donor who chose to give in a new way. With some clicks of her mouse at, Martinez became part of a growing group of internet-empowered givers in the United States. Online donations to groups surveyed by the Chronicle of Philanthropy topped $1.2 billion in 2006, up 37 percent from the year before.

"I donated online because it is a secure and easy way to make my contribution," says Martinez, expressing a sentiment shared by many of her fellow electronic donors.

Martinez, 28, juggles family life, a full-time job, and volunteer work. She works as director of the California State University Monterey Bay Alumni Association and volunteers with the Junior League of Monterey County and the Women's Fund of Monterey County. Community Hospital is one of several nonprofits she and her husband Jon have chosen to support.

"I am still paying off my college loans, the cost of living in this area is extremely high, and we do not have disposable income," she says, "but I know how important it is to give back to the community and to have a quality hospital like Community Hospital. Next time I donate, I plan to make my contribution online again."
