Anita Young: Lasting Legacy

Anita YoungIn 2004, Anita and Edwin Young moved from Prescott, Arizona, to the Park Lane in Monterey and soon began an important relationship with Community Hospital.

“We knew nothing of Community Hospital before Edwin had very successful back surgery there that April, and the hospital took excellent care of him,” Anita Young says. “Later that year, we were going out to dinner one evening when in front of the restaurant Edwin suffered a fatal heart attack.

“Community Hospital took care of me then, too.”

Anita Young wanted to do something in her husband’s memory in appreciation for his care, so she included the hospital in her estate plan. Then she found the perfect place for a tribute: the day room on the Terrace level of the Forest Pavilion, “a serenely beautiful waiting area with the most magnificent waterfall and forest view.

“In 49 years of marriage,” she says, “Edwin and I lived in six different homes, and he built a waterfall in every one of them. I felt like I was home. That room just got to me. This was a place where I could find my husband; I could sense him there. It felt so good, so reassuring. I contributed to the hospital, and they named the day terrace after my husband. This is a place where family members wait for their doctor, or just reflect. I often think about that. And I can go on now, myself, and feel very good about my decision.”
