Employee of the year: Alicia Molina

Alicia MolinaShe might have seen it coming had she paused to take stock of the work she was doing. But Alicia Molina was too busy co-organizing a hospitalwide “administrative professionals day” program, putting on a community-wide book-signing event for administrative professionals, working on the hospital’s 75th anniversary committee, driving a campaign for an employee gym, leading a project to turn hospital food waste into soil amendment, and volunteering for the annual juvenile diabetes walk to imagine she might be named Employee of the Year.

And so it came as a surprise when Molina received the award for 2010, after 27 years at Community Hospital.

“This honor came after a year of incredible projects I just decided to jump at the chance of doing,” Molina says. “It was definitely a lot of work in addition to my regular responsibilities, but I couldn’t let go of any one project because all were so important to me.”

Molina was first hired for a secretarial position assisting the director of planning and research. The recent high school graduate knew she was up against considerable competition from senior candidates, but she got the job.

Mary Clapper, who hired her, “must have seen something in me,” Molina says, “because she gave me a chance and became my mentor. Knowing what she did for me, I always wanted to pay that forward and do my very best for the hospital.

Now, as executive assistant to Vice President Cynthia Peck, the mentorship continues. Cynthia supports employees willing to reach beyond the scope of their job description.

“My involvement has definitely stretched my abilities and given me a lot more confidence in things I didn’t know I could do.

Participating in special projects adds value to my career and to the hospital because I’m a more well-rounded employee. And it keeps me enthusiastic and looking forward to coming to work, which I really value.”
