Preventive care recommendations for women

These recommendations are from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Talk to your doctor or nurse about your particular needs and any changes in your health, including your vision and hearing.

Blood pressure

Screenings starting at age 18.

Get screened if your blood pressure is higher than 135 over 80.


Ages 20–45 if you are at increased risk for heart disease. Strongly recommended at age 45 and older if at increased risk for heart disease.

Mammogram Every 2 years at age 50 and older if at average risk for breast cancer.

(The American Cancer Society recommends annual screenings starting at 40.)

Pap smear

If sexually active.

Colorectal screening

Beginning at age 50 and continuing to age 75.

Bone density

Routine screening beginning at age 65, or at age 60 for those at increased risk of fractures.


Determine if you are overweight or obese by calculating your body mass index. Calculator available online at


Get a flu shot annually. If you are 65 or older, get a pneumonia shot.

Depending on health problems, you may need a pneumonia shot at a younger age or vaccines to prevent diseases like whooping cough or shingles.
